Swing dance is an umbrella term for the many joyful dances that emerged from the swing-era of the 1920s-1950s. The dances originated in Black American communities in Harlem, NY during the Great Depression. If swing music makes you happy, swing dancing is a great way to further express that joy! We teach a variety of vernacular swing dances, including Lindy Hop (also known as Jitterbug), Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and Solo Jazz.
Learning how to swing dance is a bit like learning a language. That language can be danced locally with your friends, or taken to swing dance communities all across the globe. It is not uncommon to have super fun dances with someone you have never met.
Its social and its fun! Swing dancing is a great way to shake off the stress of the day, get some exercise, and connect with friendly people in a creative community atmosphere. It promotes healthy living, too! Benefits include improved confidence, memory, balance, coordination, and reduced anxiety.

For class, wear clothes you are comfortable moving in. For footwear, we recommend supportive shoes with a smooth sole or worn-down sole. "Grippy" shoes like tennis shoes tend to be rough on the ankles and knees, so the less friction the better! Suede- and Leather-soled shoes will help you move at your best.
If you haven't found your perfect pair of dance shoes yet, you can turn any pair of sneakers into dance shoes with "dance socks." A pair of dance socks easily goes over your sneakers so you can twist, turn, and move more easily. Dance socks are available for purchase on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We encourage all attendees, including those who are immunosuppressed or elderly, to ensure they have received the full course of CDC-recommended vaccines before attending our events.
Generally, we hope you feel comfortable whether you choose to wear a mask or not.
Elderly and immunocompromised individuals are at greater risk for complications from respiratory and other illnesses. Please stay home if you feel sick - then come back and see us when you feel better again!
