Pepperoni rolls are elegantly simple, but uniquely West Virginian: country roll dough filled with sticks or slices of pepperoni. The treat has deep roots in the coal industry (much like our state itself.) The first pepperoni rolls were probably created by miners' wives. The rolls' creation is credited to Giuseppe Argiro who emigrated from Calabria Italy to work in a Clarksburg-area coal mine and later open his own bakery. Coopers Rock State Forest
Less than 15 miles from Morgantown, Coopers Rock State Forest is home to some of the most iconic views in Almost Heaven. The park features canyon overlooks, historic sites, picnic shelters, more than 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, sandstone cliffs for climbing and bouldering, and a cross-country ski terrain. Park hours are 9am to 5pm. Note: The main overlook at Coopers Rock State Forest is closed for bridge work until July 2026. Visitors can still take in scenic views from the nearby ADA-accessible overlook and by hiking to Raven Rock. The Visitors Center is closed for the season.
Decker's Creek Rail Trail
The Decker's Creek Trail climbs at approximately a 2% grade 1,000 feet over 19 miles with rhododendron and hemlock groves, deciduous forests, into more open fields and farmlands in Preston County.
Mon River Rail Trail
48-miles of rail trails for walking, cycling, jogging, and cross-country skiing. The rail-trail connects Marion, Monongalia, and Preston Counties.
Peak Health Aquatic Center & Track Complex
The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park is an impressive, state-of-the-art, and fully accessible 90,000 square foot facility featuring a 50-meter Olympic pool and diving well. Additionally, the facility houses a community pool with zero-depth entry, water slides and play features, a six-lane lap pool, an outdoor splash pad, multi-purpose rooms to rent, and a fitness room.
